Big Brother Fingerprinting School Children.

Denbighshire pupils fingerprinted in school
Apr 24 2008 by Tom Bodden, Daily Post

HUNDREDS of pupils could be fingerprinted as a controversial method of paying for their school dinners.

Schools throughout North Wales could soon be recording children’s fingerprints as a biometric record to be checked when they pay for their food by placing their finger on a scanner.

Council chiefs claimed the new system speeded up the dinner services.

But some parents questioned why children should be fingerprinted and have worries over database security.

Vale of Clwyd AM Ann Jones questioned a lack of consultation with parents over the system.

The method is already in use in Blessed Edward Jones High School, Rhyl, where council officials hailed it a success.

Governors at Ysgol Glan Clwyd, St Asaph approved the use of the system there and parents were told by letter from Denbighshire environmental services head Steve Parker, that the system will be introduced on May 15.

Mum-of-two Sophie McKeand, from Mold, urged worried parents to speak out over the ‘cashless system’.

Ms McKeand is seeking talks with council leaders after refusing permission for her two children to have their prints recorded at Mold Alun High School in Flintshire, insisting they use a more familiar PIN system instead.

“Parents should demand an alternative to their children being fingerprinted to have a school dinner,” she said.

Labour AM Ms Jones was approached by a parent worried Denbighshire had not consulted on the change before ‘forcibly taking my child’s fingerprints’.

The couple, who did not want to be named, said: “Most shocking of all is that the council is not seeking the consent of parents before doing this.”

Ms Jones said: “I find this method totally over the top and intrusive.

“I would like to know how much Denbighshire is spending on this system.”

A Denbighshire council spokesperson said the latest technology was being rolled out to more schools but could not give a cost.

“Headteachers, parents and governors of both schools were fully informed and consulted and are supportive of the scheme,” a statement said.

The cashless system, produced by Cunninghams, is tried and tested and used by over 800 schools in the UK.

The software turns a fingerprint image into an alpha numeric code then discards the fingerprint. No image is left on the system and the code cannot be reinterpreted back into a fingerprint.

It removed the “free school meal” stigma by automatically allocating the meal allowance, the council said.

It also reduced bullying as pupils cannot be forced to hand over cash.

Hayley Jones, catering manager for Denbighshire council, said: “We believe that this is a cost-effective way forward as it will remove the need to produce replacement swipe cards when they are lost or mislaid.”

Ms McKeand, who tabled Freedom of Information requests about a similar pilot scheme in Flintshire, found it was not debated by councillors and would cost more than £25,000 to set up, with annual running costs of up to £2,000.

She joined national campaigns such as LeaveThemKidsAlone.com and No2ID.net to oppose the introduction of biometric records of all children.

A Welsh Assembly Government spokesperson said that decisions on biometric systems, such as fingerprinting, were a matter for individual schools which should comply with the Data Protection Act and guidance published by Becta, the UK government’s ICT advisory agency for schools, in conjunction with the Information Commissioner.

Across North Wales

A Wrexham council spokeswoman said: “We operate a cashless system whereby students use swipe cards.

“We have looked into the biometric system but at the moment, our system works well.”

Gwynedd said: “Primary school children pay for meals at the beginning of each week in one lump sum.

“Secondary schools use the normal method of paying there and then.

“One school in the county is currently looking into a swipe card system.”

Conwy said: “Our schools operate the normal pay as you go method.

“Some schools do have the swipe card system in place but they are not local-authority affiliated.”

Flintshire said: “We are piloting the biometric system in two of our schools.

“Schools can opt out of the scheme if they want to.”

Anglesey were last night unavailable for comment.

ID card rebels offer £1,000 for Brown’s fingerprints

Sunday April 6 2008

Two of Britain’s leading civil liberties groups are to offer a £1,000 reward for the fingerprints of the Prime Minister or Home Secretary - a move that could leave both groups open to prosecution for incitement.

The anti-ID cards group No2ID and the campaign organisation Privacy International will this week take out spoof ‘Wanted’ posters in tube stations and pub lavatories offering the cash to anyone who can lawfully obtain either the fingerprints of Gordon Brown or Jacqui Smith. An initial print run of 10,000 has been commissioned.

The posters, resembling those issued by US sheriffs hunting outlaws in the Wild West, are backed by an internet campaign and accuse Brown and Smith of ‘identity theft’.

This is bad. After winning a battle against my kids school wanting to fingerprint our kids for their library books, they are now taking stealth measures to gets our childrens fingerprints via trips to another school under the guise of forensic science lessons. My son is nine. I recieved a letter today asking for my permission for this school to take my sons photograph and fingerprints.

They can go and spin themselves silly, my son is having the day off for that trip. The head teacher is Common Purpose trained & lies all the time and can't look you in the eye when she talks to you. She has called the police on me twice now to try to save her own backside when I was protesting outside the school exposing her hidden agenda.

Here's a trailer of my upcoming film about the fingerprinting/biometric agenda:

Re-fingerprinting

Hi Darren, I had the same experience with my lad about 18mnts ago. Was given a form asking permmision which I filed in with a highlited no. The letter of explanation  that came with it was pretty confuseing/ambiguos,  and also stated that if the form was not returned by the day they were going to do the printing it would be seen as giving permission. Needless to say I kept him home from school. I feel sorry for the folks who are not awake to what is going on, they are so conditioned. If they find forms confusing and difficult to understand(which we know is done on pupose) they just go ahead and agree, and assume everyone else is doin the same, no questions asked. I get so angry sometimes.

I also wanted to say a big thankyou for all the work you are doing in exposing this issue with common pupose, and all the other issues you cover and for helping people wake up. You are a very brave man.

Gonna have a peak at the trailer now. Take care out there.

Great vid Darren, but scarey.

My daughter not even 7yrs, has been a victim to id theft, due to the bunggeling Home Office.

What disturbes me the most is the Police, which are now state police denying your freedoms yet they can take film or take pics of you without your concent, isn't that guilty before innocence. Public officials, not informing the public of their intentions or actions.

Where are these stalin, nazi ideas coming from ?
